چکیده

Apropos of article on the association between serum vitamin-D and insulin resistance in individuals with prediabetes1, the authors need to be complimented for their effort in establishing vitamin-D deficiency as a predictor for insulin resistance. As pointed out by the authors the study showed that vitamin-D insufficiency/ deficiency was common among individuals with prediabetes. However, there are some basic concerns with this finding. To establish this statement, the study should have reflected on the fact that this condition (vitamin-D deficiency in this case) is common in one population (pre-diabetics in this case) in comparison to some other population or the general population. Given the fact that vitamin-D deficiency is being widely reported not just from India but across the other populations of the world, we need to re-look at this statement. Studies estimate that 1 billion people worldwide have vitamin-D deficiency or insufficiency2. There is widespread prevalence of varying degrees (50-90%) of vitamin-D deficiency with low dietary calcium intake in Indian population3. Now, the prediabetes group included in this study1 has been selected automatically from this vitamin-D deficient population. Therefore, the fact that this study reporting on vitamin-D deficiency/insufficiency in 73.25 per cent individuals with prediabetes may just be a reflection of deficiency prevalent in general population and not specific to prediabetics.

Serum vitamin-D predicts insulin resistance in individuals with prediabetes

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Patients with diabetes and vitamin-D insufficiency have increased insulin resistance. Similar observations among individuals with prediabetes are not well documented. The aim of this study was to find the occurrence of vitamin-D insufficiency/deficiency among individuals with prediabetes and to evaluate the relationship between vitamin-D status and insulin resistance. ...

The relationship between serum level of 25- hydroxy vitamin D with anthropometric indices and some biochemical parameters in obese women

Background : Some studies have shown that the serum concentration of 25- hydroxy vitamin D which is represent the status of body vitamin D, has a diverse relationship with obesity status, and the risk of obesity decreases in people with high level of 25- hydroxy vitamin D. The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between the serum level of 25- hydroxy vitamin D and anthropometric...

Does vitamin D status correlate with clinical and biochemical features of polycystic ovary syndrome in high school girls?

Abstract   Background: Prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOs) is increasing particularly among the female adolescents and young women. It has been hypothesized that disturbance in calcium and vitamin-D metabolism may affect the symptoms of this syndrome. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between vitamin-D and calcium with metabolic parameters and other c...

The Effect of Treating Vitamin D Deficiency or Insufficiency on Serum Adiponectin, Leptin and Insulin Resistance of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients: A Pilot Study

Vitamin D deficiency is considered as one of the most prevalent healthcare problems in the world. Vitamin D contributes to insulin synthesis and secretion. Deficiency of vitamin D leads to insulin resistance which is the major cause of type 2 diabetes mellitus. We aim to evaluate the effect of treating vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency on serum adiponectin, leptin, and leptin to adiponectin...
